Most of Doctors/pharmacists/Nurses/teachers require IELTS band 7 separately in all the academic modules.For some of us it is bit difficult to achieve in first chance. The reason is the insufficient academic material in the market for academic writing .I found that books written by Sam McCarter are best for students who are finding writing and reading module difficult. The books written by him are :
Academic Writing Practice for IELTS ,IELTS Test Builder and IELTS reading tests. I have been an IELTS Teacher, Course Designer, and Examiner, at the British Council and privately for seven years, and over twenty years of experience with other tests, and I must say that I strongly recommend that students DO NOT USE the following materials:
101 Helpful Hints - because it is not current and includes "hints" and tests which can can not only waste your time but also mislead students about what they will meet on the current test,
IELTS Specimen Materials - because it is MUCH easier than the real test. Ive had more than 100 students who used this test (before they came to me) and ALL found it on average one level easier than the real test.
What ever book/s you use, you should have a qualified IELTS teacher to help you ACCURATELY judge your current band in EACH part of the test, and then prepare the most efficient program of improvement FOR YOUR NEEDS with the knowledge of what the Examiners REALLY want (which is much more than just answers on Writing and Speaking).
A regular English teacher can help you with English, but thats only half of the victory for this Test, since you must also know the special strategies and techniques to take THIS test!

You are right that 101 is easy and not helpful in scoring marks. But this book is good and simple for starters only who want to just pass ielts for admission in some low grade Universities. But the books by Sam are really beneficial especially academic writing and reading. His books are much better than the oxford books for Ielts writing. The only problem is that Sam McCarter books are costly except ielts test builder. Yes guidance is essential for scoring band 7 which is essential for overseas doctor and pharmacist to get registered in UK.

The conclusion reached by reading James” post is that even past IELTS papers are not difficult enough to suit his teaching style - which is no doubt very effective, and I have no wish to denigrate it. But there is not much hope of acceptance, then, for a book which deliberately starts students off in the shallows. Diving into the deep end - the "sink or swim" approach - can be very effective for some students with a teacher of James” calibre, but it can be a disaster for others. We tried to grade our Practice Tests, long before the concept of pre-IELTS was ever thought of, and it won”t suit all teachers. Students, however, seem willing to accept this.
Sam McCarter : Academic Writing Practice for IELTS .. I wonder if anyone has this in pdf. I checked this book at a store and it’s VERY expensive for me, a pupil.
